What you should and should not expect from your Marine Survey

You should expect your surveyor to act in a courteous, professional manner and be punctual with appointments and keep his promises. HE SHOULD ACT AS YOUR ADVOCATE IN YOUR BOAT PURCHASE.

You should expect your surveyor to be knowledgeable about your boat and take the trouble to research databases, Fair Market Value and other details as they apply to the boat being surveyed.

You should expect impartial opinions and unbiased recomendations.

A survey is a process of discovery... you should not expect your surveyor to discover every problem... you should expect him to do his best and care about your investement. Infallibility is not reality.

Marinetech uses the Standards set by the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC). It is an 800 page book with Standards as set by recognized experts in boat building. Anyone claiming that he will not miss any Standard as it applies to your boat is not being honest. Not all Standards are checked during the course of a Marine Survey. It would probably take more than a week and the report would be hundreds of pages long! Hopefully, you will have picked a surveyor who prioritzes using common sense to determine what is important..

It's a good thing to get a verbal summary of findings and recomendations but there is no substitute to seeing the written report on your computer screen after the surveyor has had a chance to work on his report, research findings, and just give things some thought. WAIT FOR THE WRITTEN REPORT BEFORE YOU ASSUME ANYTHING!

You should not expect your surveyor to word his Report in a manner that suites you or adjust the Fair Market Value to your desires. If he does, then you have found a dishonest surveyor and everything else that comes with that!
